Sandra Polley has always enjoyed craftwork, especially knitting. She particualrly enjoys creating little characters from scraps of yarn. Her designs have featured in craft magazines, such as The Knitter, Simply Knitting and Woman's Weekly. She also runs a successful small business 'Knits and Pieces' selling her patterns through yarn shops and companies throughout the UK. Sandra now lives in Leicestershire and has two daughters, a young grandson and a very little Border Terrier called Oscar.

a host of teddies!

This is an absolutely adorable book and a must for anyone wanting to knit a teddy. There's 18 patterns for bears of differing sizes and from the basic, with sew-on limbs and embroidered features, to the more complex with joints and button eyes.
I loved the sleepy bear, the black 'mourning bear' (these were given to survivors of the Titanic disaster apparently), the 'old bear' (similar to Steiff teddies) and the 1940s bear (with typical long body and short limbs of the era.)
With outfits to go with them, this is a really inspiring book!

CUTE! cute, cute cute teddy bears, how can one resist?
These are fully jointed, "real" teddy bears, like grown up teddy bears you'd pay $100 for in the store, complete with clothing. Though I think these teddy bears are more intended for adult collectors then children, with some minor adapting they'd be great for any kid in your life who wants a new friend.
There's a LOT of assembly, a lot of little fiddly pieces to make and sew together. Everything is well explained, however. The other great thing about making bears and bear clothes is that you don't need a lot of yarn or a lot of fancy yarn, to make these critters.
There's the usual how to section in the beginning of the book, geared towards making a good, well finished teddy bear, including sewing and embroidery.
The patterns for the bears are spelled out, so you not only know you are knitted the head, but which part of the head you are knitting - hints like this really do make patterns more accessible for beginner knitters. It's not the knitting that is hard, so much as the pattern reading that can be hard.

A really practical book.

I was given this book last Christmas, and I'm slowly working my way through all the patterns. The instructions are straightforward and practical, and the bears are easy to make and don't take a long time; they all turn out beautfully. You can make them with or without clothes - the clothes take a little bit of time and can be a bit fiddly, but the bears look fine just dressed with a ribbon. There are big and small bears, and many of them can be made up from odds and ends of wool left over from other projects. For a particular project eg. one of the larger bears, I'll buy wool specially. They make great presents, and this book would make an excellent gift for anyone that likes knitting, even those I'd say without too much experience. One of the best Christmas presents I've had for a long time!
