not terribly impressive

I got this from the library and I'm glad I didn't waste my money. It did have a few helpful hints. I am 48 and looking to update my look without looking like I want to be 21 again. This book was not geared to my age; more geared to a 30 something wanting to look professional. Also, something that really irritates me is when books or advertisements show before/after or good/bad photos, and the before or bad photo is just ridiculously bad. . . bad lighting, unhappy expression, bad angle for the photo, etc; and then miraculously Everything is better in the after/good photo. C'mon! We're not idiots out here! show us realistic before/after shots please!

What a great book. I LOVE the visual format, the easy style of the writing, and I am laughing at how often I read a bit and say to myself, "OF COURSE! Why didn't I toss that darned thing a year ago... Never did feel good in it!" The author points out the things you can't put your own finger on -- why something doesn't look quite right. She also tells you how to appropriately pair things, something I struggle with especially when it comes to shoes. There's a great section on what types of outfits various types of shoes/boots will complement, and what NOT to pair them with. All the solutions are uncomplicated, practical, and completely do-able. This book will make a great "girlfriend" gift too. In fact I'm going on a girls' weekend next week and I'm bringing a copy for each of my pals!

Being a stylist, fashion and style blogger, closet cleaner and overall fashion fanatic, I read virtually every book on the subject of fashion, style, how to be chic, gorgeous, age appropriate, look rich and be envied that is out there. This is one of the best I have found. Great advice - not just theory. Good examples with real people models. I am hyper-critical of "fashion" books and this one makes the cut.

Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce (1842-1914) was an American editorialist, journalist, short story writer, fabulist, and satirist. A poignant and powerful short story that delves deeply into the human psyche. One thing that fascinated me was the placement of the 'troops' for the hanging. The military organization doesn't appear to have changed in all of the years since this book was penned.

'Death is a dignitary' and in the 'military...silence and fixity are signs of deference'. The latter also resonates with me as retired military. I thought the writing was incredible. Transport yourself back to the Civil War and imagine the speech patterns and the differences in the diction.

Excellent short story and after the conclusion there are some interesting tidbits concerning the author.

I have a confession to make: I call myself a designer, but I never went to design school, only worked in a web agency for a couple months, and learned what I know by reading blogs and following along tutorials.

I think this is one of the reasons why I love writing and blogging: it gives me a chance to give back and in turn help aspiring designers just like I was helped myself.

And I also blog because I want to show that although good design can often feel magical, the process itself isn't: it's just about mastering the basics, and a lot of hard work. If I can do it, I believe you probably can as well.

So what you have here is a selection of the most interesting articles I've written over the past couple years. All I hope is that they will help make a long plane ride a little bit shorter, and just maybe give you some new perspectives on design.

EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK

User Experience is a term you hear thrown around a whole lot lately. For some people it means the way a site looks and feels, for others it's all about a site's architecture, but for most of them it's just an empty buzzword that doesn't mean anything at all.

User experience is all that and much more. It literally is what users think and feel while using your product.

UX Is Everywhere

If your site has a painless sign-up process, that's part of the user experience. If your site uses gorgeous photos, that's part of the user experience. If your site is unbearably slow, that's UX too. And if your site is perfect, but there's a bug in your code and you end up charging people twice as much for your product, well guess what, that's also part of their (very bad) user experience.

So "user experience design" can include web design, photography, speed optimization, coding, to say nothing of copywriting, branding, security, interaction design, or information architecture.

We're All User Experience Designers

It logically follows that someone who calls himself a "user experience designers" should be involved in every one of those aspects. But instead, actual "user experience designers" usually come in during the early stages of a project, and use wireframes and prototypes to plan out design, architecture, and interactions. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's not a real job. But I feel like it should be called something else, like maybe "Prototype Designer" or "User Experience Consultant" if the person comes in at a later stage to analyze an existing site.

In my mind, the title of "User Experience Designer" does not belong to a single person. Instead, it should be embraced by everybody contributing to the project, whether they are a designer, coder, photographer, writer, or systems administrator. Because after all, their work is what ultimately defines the user's experience.

"Can You Add More UX to It?"

Why is that important at all? Isn't all this just a question of semantics? Well, yes, it is. But bad semantics lead to bad communication, and that in turn leads to bad results. It's not uncommon to hear clients asking if you "do UX" or asking a designer if they "focus on UX." UX soon becomes an empty buzzword that can mean whatever the client wants it to mean.

User Experience Professionals have done a great job of promoting UX as a concept. But I feel it's now time that designers reclaim that term and make it clear that "UX" is not a mysterious new idea, but instead part of what every designer does every day.

About the Author

Michael J. Hawron studied electrical engineering and behavioral sciences at the Sloan School of Management at MIT before taking a long break from his formal education to travel the world.

Over the next thirty years, Hawron ran various successful small businesses and nonprofits while living in over thirty different countries on five different continents. Along the way, he experienced countless unique adventures, including a close encounter with a group of baboons; surviving near shipwrecks, killer typhoons, earthquakes, and ball lightning; and giving directions to a lost Chinese platoon.

While living in Hong Kong, Hawron worked as a book editor for a PR firm. Having completed his master's degree in higher education at Texas A&M University, he now works as general manager of a digital design firm.

His greatest adventure of all, however, is fathering twelve children. Now a grandfather of fourteen, Hawron lives with his wife, Annette, in Texas.

A memorable and heartfelt story that spans generations and continents.

Full of adventures and mishaps from all around the world, this is a glimpse into a life that was Mike Hawron's before we met him. Entertaining and whimsical, you will find yourself empathizing with his plight in many ways and at other times, thankful you were not anywhere in the vicinity. A worthy read for anyone that has never had the good fortune to experience foreign culture, and a must read for those fortunate enough to call Mike and Annette friends.

GREAT BOOK!! Very entertaining!

This book is great for a little get away during a business day. The short stories give reader tidbits of knowledge about other countries and cultures. There are several humorous stories and the titles make it interesting when deciding what to read next such as “The Wizard of Oops”. So much of this book makes you think I could really see those things happening.

About the Author
André Louf, OCSO, served as abbot of the Cistercian Abbey of Mont-des-Cats for thirty-five years until his retirement in 1997. His previous books in English include The Cistercian Way, Tuning in to Grace, Mercy in Weakness, Grace Can Do More, and The Way of Humility, all published by Cistercian Publications.

Monastic Series continues

This is another excellent book in the Monastic Wisdom series from Cistercian Publications.

Andre Louf was Abbot at a Trappist monastery in Northern France from 1963-1997, and this short but insightful book is a collection of his talks and thoughts from during that time. Topics include obedience, prayers, liturgy, psalms, and pilgrimage. In fact, Chapter 8, his time recalling two pilgrimages he took part in, is one of the best in the book.

The final chapter, barely four pages in length, is incredibly one of the best also. It shows the love behind the death and resurrection of Jesus. I wish it would've been longer because it's so beautifully written.

Anyone wanting to go deeper in their spiritual walk will benefit from IN THE SCHOOL OF CONTEMPLATION, not just contemplatives.

Remarkable and beautiful reflections are presented on how to see human weakness ...

Andre Louf is in the ancient term, an Abba, a spiritual Father. He presents a broad sweep of contemplative topics which are historical, scholarly, theological and in some chapters go into the abstract weeds. What was striking among many topics was the chapter on Community. Remarkable and beautiful reflections are presented on how to see human weakness of members in community life as a sign of God's grace in community. Louf reflects depth in living community with the reality of human weakness rather than the image of 'Peter Perfects' or the 'super' community vying for rungs on the 'ladder of perfection'. Holiness is seen in diversity rather than in the rarefied atmosphere of group perfection tolerating, ignoring, pitying the other, deemed less spiritually developed. A good read for Religious Superiors of community as well as anyone dealing with relationships in day to day life.
An underlying theme is the reawakening and deepening of understanding of the Spirit as the Light within all of us in all areas of life.
Ecumenical ideas written in 1970 are still relevant today. Ecumenism is seen as steps in mutual humility coming from the Spirit and not as removing theological bricks in the historical walls of division.
In the School of Contemplation is provocative for anyone living within a Monastery or outside a Monastery. It deserves a second reading in the spirit of Lectio.

What a letdown!! I must remember that in this day and age, ANYONE can write and publish a book! This "thing" reads like a grade school essay that received a grade of D. It is just a collection of a few simple ideas that have been around forever! On top of that, bad punctuation, language usage and typos make it impossible to apply the author's elementary techniques to his own work! Another thing.... In this age of technological innovation, there is NO reason for a written work to contain misspelled words. Even phones have spell check. It is obvious that the author slapped this together to make a few bucks! He/she does not know the topic nor do they care if the public gains improvement or not. Those star ratings are a scam! I want my money back!! Shopper, be wise and save yours!
