Excellent book for exam prep

I used this to review for my MOC exam. I found it to be an excellent, well-organized, focused overview, probably a bit on the overkill side for the MOC exam in terms of detail, but that's a good thing. I found very few errors. The coverage and quality are a bit erratic, as the chapters are written by different authors, and some surprising gaps--nothing about the treatment of newborn jaundice, for example.
Probably 75-80% of the book is in narrative format, while the remainder is exam-type questions with extensive comments. A good part of the material is introduced in those comments, so if you use the book, be sure to work through all the questions.
My main, and fairly minor, criticism of the book is that the photos are not good quality. Usually this doesn't matter much but it can be irritating. The color plates are quite small. Since you can find online good photos of anything, this wasn't a critical problem.
I rented this book only to discover that I couldn't access the online material since the access code had already been used. Again, probably not a big factor (and I don't know what I missed!), but I would not advise renting unless the savings is substantial.
I actually used this book as a backup to my primary study source, which was the Pediatric Board Review book by Ashish Goyal. I would also give that book 5 stars. It's less comprehensive but more focused on the important points for the exam, and is full of mnemonics and other helps, unlike Intensive Review of Pediatrics. I would advise using that book to help you organize and remember the main points, then something like Intensive Review to fill in more details, provide the Q&A format, and cover a few more topics.

Outdated!

This is a great book but note that is outdated for your Pediatric Boards (published 2013). The NRMP Guidelines for neonatal management have changed since 2015, the Red Book guidelines for immunizations have also changed as well as other details. Unless using other sources to study, it will be difficult to catch these mistakes. Would suggest to wait for a newer edition or get another book.
