Hurry up and relax

Loretta LaRoche has an amazing ability to transform stress into laughter. I first saw one of Loretta's television specials about 15 years ago and it honestly changed my life. She taught me how to "lighten up" and to look at things in a way that would make me laugh instead of cry.
This book is just another fabulous example of Loretta's sound advice and ideas to help you live a happier and less stressful life. I loved her "party pants" story and have found myself retelling it to friends and family to make a point and make them laugh.
Loretta tells it like it is using loads of humor and memorable quotes throughout the entire book. If you need to learn how to reduce stress in your life, there isn't a more enjoyable way to do it than to read this book. Congratulations to Loretta for turning millions of frowns into laughter.

Loretta La Roche is my hero. I went to the library once and asked the librarian to give me everything she had on love, laughter and joy. That is the first day I brought Loretta home and I was so moved by her message I have been a devoted fan ever since. If someone I know seems a bit down, I will tell them they need a little dose of Loretta!

She makes me laugh till I cry. I wrote her a fan letter and she wrote back! I love this lady. She makes us laugh at our self! Whenever I hear the words, ta dah, I think of her!

I keep her book, Life is Short, Wear Your Party Pants on my night stand along with a few other well chosen books, to keep close to my heart. All her books are like reference books for me. There is a section in the back for notes and I have every inch of space completely covered. Every time I pick it up, I take something positive away with me.

Her humor delights me and sometimes, just hearing her voice (I have all her tapes) I automatically start Laughing ...which happens to be one of my favorite activities and according to Loretta it works wonders to lower your stress levels which increases your immune system and on and on!

I wish we had more people like her. Do yourself a favor and fill up your cart with whatever she has to sell, you will not regret it for a second! I own every single book, tape, cd, video and silly kit she has to offer....did I mention how much she makes me laugh?

She is one funny lady, and because of her, I wear my party pants all the time! Order her book today! Do not pass go or collect $200.

About the Author

Turan Gönen is Professor of Electrical Engineering at California State University, Sacramento. He holds a BS and MS in Electrical Engineering from Istanbul Technical College (1964 and 1966, respectively), and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Iowa State University (1975). Dr. Gönen also received an MS in Industrial Engineering (1973) and a Ph.D. co-major in Industrial Engineering (1978) from Iowa State University, and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from the University of Oklahoma (1980).

Professor Gönen is the Director of the Electrical Power Educational Institute at California State University, Sacramento. Previously, Dr. Gönen was Professor of Electrical Engineering and Director of the Energy Systems and Resources Program at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Professor Gönen also held teaching positions at the University of Missouri-Rolla, the University of Oklahoma, Iowa State University, Florida International University and Ankara Technical College. He has taught electrical electric power engineering for over thirty one years.

Dr. Gönen also has a strong background in power industry; for eight years he worked as a design engineer in numerous companies both in the United States and abroad. He has served as a consultant for the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), Aramco, Black & Veatch Consultant Engineers, and the public utility industry. Professor Gönen has written over 100 technical papers as well as four other books: Modern Power System Analysis, Electric Power Distribution System Engineering, Electrical Machines, and Engineering Economy for Engineering Managers.

Turan Gönen is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and a Senior Member of the Institute of Industrial Engineers. He served on several Committees and Working Groups of the IEEE Power Engineering Society, and he is a member of numerous honor societies including Sigma Xi, Phi Kappa Phi, Eta Kappa Nu, and Tau Alpha Pi. Professor Gönen received the Outstanding Teacher Award at CSUS in 1997.

Excellent compendium on the creatures and plants from the Harry Potter movies

[[VIDEOID:892d2c4463b626544b5c670264fbe9f6]]As a Harry Potter fan, I have quite a few companion books. The largest in my collection is Harry Potter Page to Screen: The Complete Filmmaking Journey. Right after I bought Page to Screen, I discovered there was a collector's edition that included several other books. I did not get the collector's edition since I already have the main book, but I've always longed to see those additional books.

Harry Potter: The Creature Vault is actually the expanded version of the The Creature Shop Compendium book that is part of Harry Potter Page to Screen Collector's Edition.

This new edition has a makeover and now sports a purple coloured embossed cover. The page count has increased to 208. It's a beautiful looking compendium.

This book looks at all the creatures and magical plants that have appeared in the movie series. It's packed with creature designs, concept art, film stills and photos from behind the scenes which shows how the crew build the animatronics, maquettes, sculptures and life-size models such as the Basilisk or the dragons.

Concept art for the creatures comes in the form of sketches, watercolours and digital paintings. Bulk of the book consists the artworks with accompanying text. A few pictures were reused from Page to Screen but not a big issue.

Below's the list of chapters that group the creatures according to their type:

1. Forest Dwellers - Centaur, Unicorn, Acromantula, Hippogriff, Thestral
2. Lake Dwellers - Merperson, Grindylow
3. Sky Dwellers - Dragon, Cornish Pixie

There's a huge bunch of creatures and plants featured. All are given ample coverage in terms of art and text. Author Jody Revenson has provided an insightful writeup that talks about their designs for the movies, the story component and interesting details such as the technical parts on how the creatures were created, be it in computer or real life. I believe it will be a satisfying read for any Harry Potter fan, especially those who craves for details.

The book description mentioned there's an Eeylops Owl Emporium. That's actually a small 8-page booklet sticked to the main pages showing photos of several owls. The other extra goodie is an A3 size one page bestiary poster with 16 selected creatures.

One last thing to note is there are two publishers for this book. It seems that publisher Harper Design is distributing for USA and Canada, and Titan Books are distributing for UK, Europe and other regions. So depending on where you are and from which publisher you buy from, the book's price might vary slightly. I find that Titan Books sell it cheaper, and for overseas buyers, it's more worth it to get the book from Book Depository.

I really enjoyed going through all the information and looking at the beautiful concept art. This is yet another excellent companion to the movies.

Highly recommended to all Harry Potter fans.

A Very 'Tight' Vault

The 'Harry Potter: The Creature Vault'; 'The Creatures and Plants of the Harry Potter Films' by Insight Editions and published by Harper Design clocks in at 208 pages. This purple, slightly embossed book (no ribbon) is a wonderful addition to your 'Harry Potter Page to Screen: The Complete Filmmaking Journey Collector's Edition' collection and is quite reminiscent to the look and feel of 'A Guide to the Graphic Arts Department' (minus the orange). This thoroughly expanded book contains a new introduction, fully fledged descriptions, two to four times the amount of pictures per creature/plant, and what makes this special is that a majority of the pictures are new to this volume ... so minus the concept and organization, it is entirely new. As a bonus, the book comes with a small Eeylops Owl Emporium pamphlet and a pull-out Bestiary Poster of 16 creatures.

The green embossed, faux-leather book (with ribbon) has beautiful bounding, and although the page count, descriptions and images are far less for this edition, it does come with completely different pictures.

This book is an Expanded reprinting of The Creature Vault book previously only available in the limited edition and tre expensive book set; Page to Screen Collectors Edition.

Embossed paper boards with a design meant to simulate fabric covered cover boards, accented with metallic gold - Emulating the previous limited edition. Very nicely done.

A few images are revisits from the Page to Screen tome, 90 percent of the images are exclusive to this volume.

Many many images through out, Full page, half page, quarter page and all.

Very complete use of the page layouts as every creature in the Potter universe is explored and given its fair share of page time; With the majority given multiple pages of insightful text and development art, both two dimensional and sculpted work.

All artwork is given it's proper attribution to the artist behind the work is most cases (WETA books does the best at resolving this, giving each artwork shown the initials of the artist and a decoder key).

Brilliant!

I, too, came to the idea that Julius Caesar was the Christ that was worshipped all over the empire before the time of the Jewish Rebellion and the possible writing or re-writing of the texts of the NT by, or following, the Flavian emperors (with the help of Josephus). When I came to this idea, after a long study of the Roman Empire and pulling on certain threads, I was actually afraid to say anything about it to anyone. So, to say that I am thankful that there are at least a couple others who have come to the same conclusion is heartening. I've spent many years researching NT criticism looking for the answer and all the time, it was staring everyone right in the face. Based on those studies, I can tell the reader that Courtney's book condenses thousands of books and papers on the topic into less than 200 pages. That, itself, is a brilliant feat - almost a miracle!

Not only has he condensed the best scholarly work on the Bible, he has done it entertainingly and with excellent examples and logical progressions. He writes for everyman, thank goodness! Reading the same material written by most scholars in their jargon (designed to keep out the uninitiated) can make you go cross-eyed.

I highly, HIGHLY, recommend this book to everyone. Humanity has been subjected to a 2000 year long deception of history; it's time for the real hero of humanity to get the credit he deserves. After all the material and lies about him are waded through, Julius Caesar shines forth as the greatest man in the history of Western Civilization, bar none.

Joining the dots

Perhaps its a human weakness to grasp part of a complex truth and hasten to far-reaching conclusions. Gary Courtney provides one such summation. "JC's passion is essentially Caesar's fate in Judaic disguise, coincidentally grafted onto the dying/resurrcting cult of Attis." Is he right? Of course - up to a point.

An investigation of gospel origins is a special challenge. In searching for finite currents of explanation in the vast ocean of information one longs for a solution which brings the whole multi-layered brew into manageable focus. But before the researcher can even start he is necessarily involved in wading through a swamp of faith-based apologetics and special pleading. Courtney handles that task well but it does take up half of a slim volume.

The betrayal and murder of Caesar bears uncanny parallels to the drama of JC. A religious play - a fabula praetexta - quite probably commemorated the death and apotheosis of the man who would be king. The Caesar cult surely did breath new life into ancient cults of dying/resurrecting godmen. Quite plausibly the Jewish fans of Caesar assimilated the sacrificed 'saviour of mankind' into the 'Suffering Servant' of Isaiah, and rolled the melodrama of the Ides of March into the Passion of the Passover. The gospels, with their curious rhetorical elements, 'comings and goings', and theatrical flourishes, most assuredly read like a play and not history. There's more than coincidence here and we long for these insights to be developed fully.

But pause. Homeric epics, Buddhist sutras, Gnostic speculations, psychoactive drugs, Egyptian priestcraft, 200 years of Roman imperial politics? We can't dismiss other insights that lightly. Courtney makes a valuable contribution but we haven't charted the ocean - yet.

Quite interesting

This book is really two books in one - The Space Merchants and The Merchants' War. The Merchants' War was written by Frederik Pohl and Cyril M. Kornbluth in 1952, and tells the story of a dystopian future, where ad-companies rule, and consumers are the cattle they drive. The Merchants' War is a sequel, written in 1984, some twenty-odd years after the death of Mr. Kornbluth, and it tells the story of the inevitable folly that this out of control world must produce.

Overall, I found these two stories to be quite interesting. Admittedly, the anti-capitalistic angle is played very heavily, but these books are designed as political statements, and not as pure science fiction. And, I must say that I found the story lines to be quite interesting, and the action gripping. So, if you like a good read, then I would highly recommend this book.
