Following My Thumb, by Gabriel Morris

Following My Thumb follows the wandering, rambling, bumbling travels of Gabriel Morris from 1990-2000. In the summer of 1990, at the age of 18, he sets off to Europe with his over-sized backpack, thumb guiding the way. He hitchhikes the entire length of Great Britain, sleeps in barns, on bridges and beaches and under benches, explores the Greek Isles, sneaks into a Parisian movie theater, spends a night at the center of the Place de la Concorde roundabout, and more. In Part 2 of the book, he spends the bulk of the mid-1990s as a wandering traveler back home in the United States, searching for something elusive: a place to call home, a community, love, adventure, meaning, purpose. He both finds and loses all to varying degrees as he attends tribal Rainbow Gatherings in the woods, falls in and out of love on the road, lives on farms and communes, and spends several months in an idyllic valley, far from civilization in the Hawaiian rainforest. The book culminates with his amazing and thought-provoking travels in the mystical land of India.

Be Warned! You WILL book a ticket after reading this book!
By Cynthia
Be warned that while reading "Following My Thumb" you will be tempted SEVERAL times to book a flight to any(or all!) destinations mentioned in Gabriel's book! Gabriel really makes his readers feel like they are on the wanderlust journey with him! While reading, I pictured myself in every scenario as if I was the one taking the journey. It felt real! The hilarious stories not only had me laughing out loud but up at the wee hours of the morning turning every page anxiously to find out what happens next! Grab a cup of tea, curl up and let Gabriel take you on an exciting journey as he paints his stories in a way that make you feel like you are listening to a good friend relive his adventures! If you have always yearned to travel outside the familiarity of your home or break free from 9-5 work days and finally book a vacation, you will need no further convincing after reading "Following My Thumb" I am on my way to Europe in 2 weeks and I can partially blame Gabriel for this :)

A good read
By Bonnie Neely
FOLLOWING MY THUMB BY GABRIEL MORRIS is an interesting book about amazing hitch-hiking journeys by the author, who spent about 10 years literally following his thumb. He traversed several continents this way with only a backpack and tent and his carefully selected shoes. He is obviously a minimalist who loves the out of doors and is fearless in nature and amongst strangers. His solitude and what he gains from this is touching. You will find this book both fun to read and will catch yourself saying, "I can't believe he did that!" His many experiences inspire his spiritual nature and help him gain much wisdom and insight into people and places. A good read!

Aesthetics (Oxford Readers)From Oxford University Press

Can we ever claim to understand a work of art or be objective about it? Why have cultures thought it important to separate out a group of objects and call them art? What does aesthetics contribute to our understanding of the natural landscape? Are the concepts of art and the aesthetic elitist?
Addressing these and other issues in aesthetics, this important new Oxford Reader includes articles by authors ranging from Aristotle and Xie-He to Jun'ichiro Tanizaki, Michael Baxandall, and Susan Sontag. It focuses on why art and a variety of aesthetics matter to us, and on how perceivers participate in and contribute to the experience of appreciating a work of art. With its multicultural and multidisciplinary scope, this volume shows how anthropology, art history, Chinese theories of painting, and other perspectives both enrich and provide alternatives to classic philosophical accounts of art and the aesthetic.

Great book on Aesthetics
By A Customer
This is more than just the result of the growth in academic specialization. No one comes out of a Ph.D. program in philosophy without some grounding in metaphysics and epistemology, logic and philosophy of science, the history of philosophy and ethics. Metaphysics and epistemology, like logic, are defined as `core areas' of philosophy. History and ethics, while not core areas, belong nonetheless to the `essential perimeter' of the field. It is difficult - indeed, in most programs, impossible - to get a Ph.D. without doing work in these areas. They are areas in which everyone is expected to have opinions and be able to discuss at least the standard problems.
Because the same is not true of aesthetics, the vast majority of philosophers enter the profession with little or no knowledge of the methods or questions of the field. As a result, philosophers generally either ignore issues of art and aesthetics or think of them as having little or no bearing on the central concerns of the discipline. Most systematic philosophers pass entire careers without ever turning their attention to questions of art or beauty. Davidson and Goodman are rare exceptions. Nor is this lack of interest in aesthetics - or the related absence of aesthetics from the pages of the most widely read and prestigious philosophy journals - likely to raise any eyebrows. And so, when philosophy departments sit down to determine the fields in which they wish to hire, it should come as no surprise that it doesn't occur to anyone to think of aesthetics. Marginalization begets marginalization.
So much for the de facto standing of aesthetics. What are we to make of this situation? This leads to the third question mentioned above: what is the proper standing, the true value or significance, of aesthetics?
Perhaps the most common answer to this question is that aesthetics, properly understood, just is philosophically marginal. The view that the de facto standing of aesthetics is indeed its proper standing is held not only by philistines who don't care about art - "this is all aesthetics deserves" - but also by those, like Stanley Cavell and Ted Cohen, who care about art a great deal - as Cohen puts it, "it is here, despite the precariousness of its position, that aesthetics is at its best."

Where are the artists?
By Michael G. Mcneill
This was the textbook for Philosophy of Art, and I must admit I got quite a bit out of it. Maynard and Feagin introduced me to the ideas of Hegel, Kant, Dewey, and other prominent philosophers. The essays inspired me to think more deeply about referentialism in art, organic unity, expression, and aesthetics. These are really all things which an artist ought to consider, and this book is a good introduction.
"But," I asked myself a number of times, "where are the artists?" Only a handful of the articles were written by artists, and they were either short, or written by fiction and poetry authors. It seems to me that those who actually create art would be in a better position than a philosopher to address certain aspects of aesthetic theory. There are quite a few artists (as far as I can find) who have discussed their artistic philosophies in books, interviews, articles, etc. A book professing to address theories of art and aesthetics would do well to call on a few artists. Of course, this is probably argumentum ad hominem.

By Ace Wall
It's good but Damnnn.....56 buck-a-roos what the f---? Guess its cause its a uni book. I had to buy it for the class of the same title. Be prepared to read a sentence like 6 times before you start to get it. Makes for lengthy reading. My prof did clarify things in class that I couldn't understand on my own. Lots of writers and philosophers. Spending a few months alone on a deserted island...this will keep you busy.

First love. . . forever love. Sixteen-year old Gabby Hayden wasn’t the kind of girl who gave a hoot about boys. She had a few real loves. Water-skiing, going out on Smith Mountain Lake with her dad and her dog. Anything else ranked a distant second. Until the summer smart, caring, gorgeous Sam Tatum gave her his heart. It had been the most wonderful time of her life, lazy days hanging out at the dock, skinny-dipping at midnight, staring up at the stars from the back of Sam’s truck. They are planning their future together when Sam’s father is transferred to South Africa. Devastated, Gabby and Sam promise to wait for each other during the two years before he returns for college. But lonely and angry, Sam makes a mistake that will change the course of both their lives. Years later, an unexpected diagnosis brings Sam home to his parents’ house on Smith Mountain Lake where he believes he can find peace and acceptance. Must read novel about first loves
By Penny L
I highly recommend this first book in the Smith Mountain Lake series. Sam and Gabby fall in love and make plans for a future together. Sam's father gets transferred to South Africa and 6 months later, Sam gets stupid drunk and sleeps with another girl. Gabby is devastated. Gabby and Sam live their lives apart, but they never forget each other. Sam returns to his family's summer home, after an unexpected diagnosis, 25 years later. Will Sam and Gabby reconcile or is she unable to forgive him? This novel will have you laughing and crying both. I really enjoyed this. I can't wait for the next book in this series. Please read. I promise you won't be disappointed.

Absolutely touching....a story about second chances and forgiveness
By J Marie
Let me start by saying that I do not usually write a detailed review of a book. (I usually just give it a star rating). This book was the exception! I am an avid reader and usually read 3-5 books a week depending on time and work. Blue Wide Sky lead me on an emotional roller coaster.
Sam and Gabby were young sweethearts who were separated when Sam and his dad had to move to South Africa. Sam and Gabby promised each other that they would continue to love one another with hopes of being together again one day. Unfortunately, life didn't happen that way and a choice Sam made lead to a life-changing event.
Many years later, after Sam is divorced and receives some really bad news, he returns to the place where he and Gabby began. Gabby still lives there and when they see each other again it is an emotional hailstorm.
I cannot give anymore away because it would not do justice to this wonderful story. Sam and Gabby's story made me smile, made my heart ache, and brought tears to my eyes. Ms. Cooper was kind enough to give each character a voice with her dual POVs and I can tell you, Sam's POV made me hurt for him and his regret for hurting Gabby, the only woman he ever truly loved. All I can say is to not pass up this beautiful story of second chances and forgiveness. I cannot wait to read more of Inglath Cooper. Thanks so much for this wonderful story.

The Wander Society, by Keri Smith

From the internationally bestselling creator of Wreck This Journal...

wan·der
verb  \ˈwän-dər\
to walk/explore/amble in an unplanned or aimless way with a complete openness to the unknown

Several years ago when Keri Smith, bestselling author of Wreck This Journal, discovered cryptic handwritten notations in a worn copy of Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass, her interest was piqued. Little did she know at the time that those simple markings would become the basis of a years-long, life-changing exploration into a mysterious group known only as The Wander Society, as well as the subject of this book.

Within these pages, you’ll find the results of Smith’s research: A guide to the Wander Society, a secretive group that holds up the act of wandering, or unplanned exploring, as a way of life. You’ll learn about the group’s mysterious origins, meet fellow wanderers through time, discover how wandering feeds the creative mind, and learn how to best practice the art of wandering, should you choose to accept the mission.

Review
Praise for The Wander Society

“Thanks to Smith's compilation of notes, observations, and musings, readers will have no difficulty incorporating these ideas into a daily routine [and] will have a fun time away from the hubbub of modern life. . . . The amusing and informative philosophy of a hidden culture that proposes that wandering is the key to a soulful life.” —Kirkus Reviews

“Curious and bewitching, this book serves as an antidote to modern consumer culture.” —BookPage

“If you are looking for a respite from a hectic, busy life and wish you had more time to think and explore the world around you, The Wander Society might just be able to help. . . . The philosophy is sound and inspiring, and the writing draws you in.  You will find several helpful hints that will help you slow down the world around you just a little.” —Real Style Magazine

“The Wander Society truly is for everyone, and I have the feeling everyone can do with it what they want and as they please. . . .  Any book that encourages a reader not only to interact with the physical item ‘book’ but also with their surroundings in a playful and creative way while walking is a good book; of which too few are being published at the moment.  It is good to know that the Wander Society is out there.” —Elsewhere Journal

“While Smith gathers what she has discovered of the invisible Wander Society, the unanswerable questions of who and why begin to lose their importance. Planted, instead, is the seed of an inspiring and creative way of life: one tied not to technology and societal norms, but rather married to the more romantic notions of morality, curiosity, and discovery.” —Literary Inklings

“As someone who has been becoming more and more disenchanted with technology and how social media seems to rule everything around us, this book couldn't have come at a more perfect time. . . . The Wander Society really, really struck a chord with me and was exactly the encouragement I needed to get out and do more of what I really love.” —The Dainty Squid

“Amazingly creative. . . . If you’re a traveler like I am, this is a great gift to yourself (or another fellow traveler). Let it inspire you to let go of agendas on your next trip and just see where a path (beaten or unbeaten) will take you.” —Nancy D. Brown, What a Trip

“The Wander Society is inspiring and an act needed in our society today. It talks of slowing down, taking time, imagining, and living simply.” —Luxury Reading

“Part philosophical memoir, part investigative journalism, The Wander Society is a book unlike any I’ve ever read. It packs a hearty punch and truly left me inspired to go out and do some wandering of my own!” —The Pretty Good Gatsby

“The book is designed with an eye to portability. You can take it on your wanderings. . . . If you are inclined to or curious about wandering, I recommend The Wander Society.” —The Local Ecologist

“Different people will respond to different elements of The Wander Society. There are lists, there are diagrams, there are poems, there are assignments. They all encourage you towards a common goal: to let go, start wandering in your daily life, and see what happens.” —Reading Rambo

“There is something mysterious and deeply powerful about the ideas in this book: it deals with the exploration of not just the environment and your community, but inner exploration: an exploration of your own imagination and unconscious. . . . a fascinating and exciting book.” —Cats and Chocolate

The Wander Society - are you a member?
By Aleta Karstad
A whimsical exposition of an idea that has long been central to our philosophy... it is exciting to see how many beloved writers and naturalists from yesteryears were also "members" of the Wander Society (unbeknownst to them). My first impulse on receiving my copy was to buy more to have on hand to give to kindred spirits.

A fun book that is also a bit mysterious!
By Katherine
I love this book! I really like it's simplicity and her easy "how to make" projects. I keep it with me everywhere I go. I'm ordering some as Christmas presents for my "Wander" friends and family. If you love adventure in a low key way read and enjoy Keri Smith's The Wander Society.

By poppyinthesun
When I first received the book I was completely intrigued. I felt like I had finally found belonging in a group of like minded people where I had always seen myself as alone in my habits of wandering in nature and following my curiosity. I was also very intrigued by the unfolding of Keri's discovery of this secret group. My investigative nature kicked in and I could not stop asking questions about the origins of this mysterious society. I noticed that all of the drawings on the wander society website looked familiarly like Keri's past instruction sheets in her previous books. And then I researched the origins of the website. It was created in 2015. I felt the joy and curiosity drain from my face. This means that Keri created the website herself. I have to wonder if the whole story is just that.. A story. While I still find companionship in the philosophy of the book I must admit I feel a sense of loss as well. Sure people have been packaging stories as truth for many years. But this one hit me harder than I wanted.

Nuns and Nunneries in Renaissance Florence, by Sharon T. Strocchia

The 15th century was a time of dramatic and decisive change for nuns and nunneries in Florence. In the course of that century, the city's convents evolved from small, semiautonomous communities to large civic institutions. By 1552, roughly one in eight Florentine women lived in a religious community. Historian Sharon T. Strocchia analyzes this stunning growth of female monasticism, revealing the important roles these women and institutions played in the social, economic, and political history of Renaissance Florence. It became common practice during this time for unmarried women in elite society to enter convents. This unprecedented concentration of highly educated and well-connected women transformed convents into sites of great patronage and social and political influence. As their economic influence also grew, convents found new ways of supporting themselves; they established schools, produced manuscripts, and manufactured textiles. Strocchia has mined previously untapped archival materials to uncover how convents shaped one of the principal cities of Renaissance Europe. She demonstrates the importance of nuns and nunneries to the booming Florentine textile industry and shows the contributions that ordinary nuns made to Florentine life in their roles as scribes, stewards, artisans, teachers, and community leaders. In doing so, Strocchia argues that the ideals and institutions that defined Florence were influenced in great part by the city's powerful female monastics. Nuns and Nunneries in Renaissance Florence shows for the first time how religious women effected broad historical change and helped write the grand narrative of medieval and Renaissance Europe. The book is a valuable text for students and scholars in early modern European history, religion, women's studies, and economic history.

Review

Strocchia examines the complex interrelationships between Florentine nuns and the laity, the secular government, and the religious hierarchy. The author skillfully analyzes extensive archival and printed sources.

(Choice)

Strocchia performs a service both to convent studies and to historians of Renaissance Florence by bringing these two fields together... Convents, long a hazy presence on the rich scholarly map of Renaissance Florence, now have their political and economic contours there clearly charted.

(P. Renée Baernstein Renaissance Quarterly)

An enjoyable, well-written account by a gifted historian clearly knowledgeable about her subject.

(Laura Swan Magistra)

Strocchia makes a significant contribution to the developing body of work on women's religious life in the Renaissance... providing a plethora of research avenues for the interested scholar and an interesting glimpse of Renaissance life for the general reader.

(Sally Mayall Brasher American Historical Review)

A convincing and wide-ranging analysis of a crucial facet of Renaissance Florence.

(Brian Maxson Canadian Journal of History)

An original and high-quality contribution to the knowledge of the monastic institute.

(Gabriella Zarri Catholic Historical Review)

One of the central arguments advanced in this book is that the fifteenth century was a decisive moment both for convents and for their relations with urban society.

(Karin Tilmans European Review of History)

This is a splendid intervention in the expanding study of religious women's communities. It is a 'must read.'

(Constance H. Berman Historian)

An important volume which deserves to be read and re-read not only by historians of the Renaissance church, but also by those interested in the histories of women, work and early modern urban culture.

(Roisin Cossar European History Quarterly)

Lucidly written and meticulously organized... The book is remarkable for both its richness and its clarity: the chapters are logically framed, the sections of broad argumentation are supported by vivid case studies, and the conclusions are both sound and thought-provoking... Strocchia's study makes a significant contribution to the study of Renaissance Florence. By weaving the convent into myriad aspects of Florentine social and political life, she offers both thought-provoking findings and a trove of new evidence that will make the book required reading for a wide range of scholars.

(Diana Bullen Presciutti Early Modern Women: An Interdisciplinary Journal)

Well worth your close attention whether you are interested in Renaissance religion or ruling dynasties or the textile industry of Florence.

(Bibliotheque d'Humanisme et Renaissance)

A most impressive investigation of the intricate connections that developed between convents and the Florentine state in the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries.

(Journal of Social History)

Through scrupulous archival research, Strocchia situates her nuns in the context of late medieval spiritual, political, social, and urban developments... Strocchia convincingly moves the history of nuns and nunneries to the center of our understanding of Renaissance urban geography.

(Holly S. Hurlburt Enterprise and Society)

In this brilliant study, Strocchia brings us a deftly crafted analysis of Florentine convents and life within them... The combination of Strocchia’s scholarship and engaging narrative sets a new standard for future studies of nunneries in other Italian cities. This is a superb book!

(Charmarie J. Blaisdell Church History)

This well-conceived work breaks new ground for the role of convents in society and politics in early modern Europe.

(Carol M. Bresnahan Journal of Interdisciplinary History)

Strocchia has written a judicious, balanced, and meticulously researched book, one that is drawn from a splendid breadth of archival sources and that makes a major contribution to our understanding of the complex and changing relationships between ecclesiastical institutions, family strategy, and civic consciousness.

(Philip Gavitt Speculum)

A terrific book. It’s superb in its analysis of the internal life of convents and in its subtle and thorough use of archival materials. There is no other book like it and historians will turn to it for a long time to come.

(Judith C. Brown, Wesleyan University)

SHE COULDN'T CONCENTR ATE ON MAKING LOVE. No matter how tenderly or passionately or intimately Ken touched her, her mind was miles away. It was a little after five on Tuesday afternoon, the time they protected from meetings or dinner with friends or anything else that might interfere with their getting together, and usually Corinne relished the lovemaking with her fiancé. Today, though, she wanted to fast-forward to the pillow talk. She had so much to say.

Ken rolled off her with a sigh, and she saw him smile in the late-afternoon light as he rested his hand on her stomach. Did that mean something? Smiling with his hand on her belly? She hoped so but didn't dare ask him. Not yet. Ken loved the afterglow—the slow untangling of their limbs and the gradual return to reality—so she would have to be patient. She stroked her fingers through his thick, ash-blond hair as she waited for his breathing to settle down. Their baby was going to beautiful, no doubt about it.

"Mmm," Ken purred as he nuzzled her shoulder. Thin bands of light slipped into the room through the blinds, leaving luminous stripes on the sheet over his legs. "I love you, Cor."

"I love you, too." She wrapped her arm around him, trying to sense if he was alert enough to listen to her. "I did something amazing today," she began. "Two somethings, actually."

"What did you do?" He sounded interested, if not quite awake.

"First, I took the 540 to work."

His head darted up from his pillow. "You did?"

"Uh-huh."

"How was it?"

"Excellent." She'd had sweaty palms the whole time, but she'd managed. For the past few years, she'd taught fourth grade in a school eight miles from their house, and she'd never once had the courage to take the expressway to get there. She'd stuck to the tiny back roads, curling her way through residential neighborhoods, dodging cars as they backed out of driveways. "It took me about ten minutes to get to work," she said. "It usually takes me forty."

"I'm proud of you," he said. "I know how hard that must have been to do."

"And then I did another amazing thing," she said.

"I haven't forgotten. Two things, you said. What other amazing thing did you do?"

"I went on the field trip to the museum with my class, instead of staying at school like I'd planned."

"Now you're scaring me," he teased. "Are you on some new drug or something?"

"Am I remarkable or what?" she asked.

"You are definitely the most remarkable woman I know." He leaned over to kiss her."You're my brave,beautiful,red-haired girl."

She'd walked inside the museum as though she did it every day of the week, and she bet no one knew that her heart was pounding and her throat felt as though it was tightening around her windpipe. She guarded her phobias carefully. She could never let any of her students' parents—or worse, her fellow teachers—know.

"Maybe you're trying to do too much too fast," Ken said. She shook her head."I'm on a roll," she said."Tomorrow, I plan to step into the elevator at the doctor's office. Just step into it," she added hastily. "I'll take the stairs. But stepping into it will be a first step. So to speak. Then maybe next week, I'll take it up a floor." She shuddered at the thought of the elevator doors closing behind her, locking her in a cubicle not much bigger than a coffin.

"Pretty soon you won't need me anymore."

"I'm always going to need you." She wondered how serious he was with that statement. It was true that she needed Ken in ways most people didn't need a partner. He was the driver anytime they traveled more than a few miles from home. He was her rescuer when she'd have a panic attack in the supermarket, standing in the middle of an aisle with a full cart of groceries. He was the one holding on to her arm as he guided her through the mall or the Concert Hall or wherever they happened to be when her heart started pounding."I would just like to not need you that way. And I have to do this, Ken. I want that job."

She'd been offered a position that would start the following September, training teachers in Wake County to use a reading curriculum in which she'd become expert. That meant driving. A lot of driving. There would be six-lane highways to travel and bridges to cross and elevators she would have no choice but to ride. September was nearly a year away, and she was determined to have her fears mastered by then.

"Kenny."She pulled closer to him, nervous about the topic she was about to broach. "There's something else we really need to talk about."

His muscles tightened ever so slightly beneath her hands. "The pregnancy," he said.

She hated when he called it the pregnancy. She guessed she'd misread his smile earlier. "About the baby," she said. "Right."

He let out a sigh. "Cor, I've thought about it and I just don't think it's the right time. Especially with you starting a new job next year. How much stress do you need?"

"It would work out," she said. "The baby's due in late May. I'd take the end of the year off and have the summer to get used to being a mom and find day care and everything." She smoothed her hand over her stomach. Was it her imagination or was there already a slight slope to her belly? "We've been together so long," she continued. "It just doesn't make sense for me to have an abortion when I'm almost twenty-seven and you're thirty-eight and we can afford to have a child." She didn't say what else she was thinking: Of course, we'd have to get married. Finally. They'd been engaged and living together for four years, and if her pregnancy forced them to set a date, that was fine with her.

He gave her shoulders a squeeze, then sat up. "Let's talk about it later, okay?" he said.

"When?" she asked. "We can't keep putting this off."

"Later tonight," he promised.

She followed his gaze to the phone on the night table. The message light was blinking. He picked up the receiver and punched in their voice-mail code, then listened."Three messages," he said, hitting another button on the phone. The light in the room had grown dim, but she was still able to see him roll his eyes as he listened to the first message.

"Your mother," he said. "She says it's urgent."

"I'm sure." Corinne managed a laugh. Now that Dru had spilled the news of her pregnancy to their parents, she'd probably be getting urgent calls every day. Her mother had already e-mailed her to tell her that redheads were more prone to hemorrhaging after delivery. Thanks a heap, Mom. She hadn't bothered to reply. She hadn't spoken with her mother more than a few times in the past three years.

"There's one from Dru, too," Ken said."She says to call her the minute you get the message."

That was more worrisome. An urgent message from her mother was easy to ignore. From her sister, less so."I hope there's not anything wrong," she said, sitting up.

"They would have called you on your cell if it was so important," he said, still holding the phone to his ear.

"True." She got out of bed and pulled on her short green robe, then picked up her phone from the dresser and turned it on."Except, I didn't have my cell on today because of the field trip, so—"

"What the—" Ken frowned as he listened to another message.

"What the hell are you talking about?" He shouted into the phone. Glancing at his watch, he walked across the room to turn on the television.

"What's going on?" Corinne watched him click through the channels until he reached WIGH, the Raleigh station for which he was a reporter. "That was a message from Darren," he said, as he punched another phone number into the receiver."He's kicking me off the Gleason story."

"What?" She was incredulous. "Why?"

"He said it was for obvious reasons, like I should know what the hell he's talking about." He looked at his watch again and she knew he was waiting for the six-o'clock news. "Come on, come on," he said to the television or the phone—or maybe both."Give me Darren!" he yelled into the receiver. "Well, where is he?" He hung up and started dialing again.

"They can't pull you off that story," she said."That would be so unfair after all the work you've done on it." The Gleason story was his baby. He'd even attracted national attention for it. People were talking about him being a candidate for the Rosedale Award.

"Darren said,'Did you know about this?' like I've been keeping something from him." Ken ran his fingers through his hair. "Oh, don't give me your damn voice mail," he said into the phone.

"Dammit." She felt his impatience as he waited to leave a message.

"What the hell do you mean, I'm off the Gleason story?" he shouted. "Call me!"

He tossed the receiver onto the bed, then pounded the top of the television with his fist as though he could make the news come on sooner through force. "I don't believe this," he said. "When I left the courthouse today, the jury hadn't sentenced him yet and they were supposed to reconvene tomorrow. Maybe I heard it wrong. Maybe I missed the sentencing. Damn!"

Corinne looked down at the cell phone in her hand as she cycled through the list of callers."I have five messages, all from my parents' house," she said. Something was wrong. "I'd better call—"

"Shh," Ken said, turning up the volume as the brassy theme music introduced the news, and anchorman Paul Provost appeared on the screen.

"Good evening, Triangle," Paul said, referring to the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area. "Just hours before Timothy Gleason was to be sentenced for the 1977 murder of Genevieve Russell and her unborn child, a shocking revelation shed doubt on his guilt."

"What?" Ken stared at the TV.

Footage of a small arts-and-crafts-style bungalow filled the screen. The roof looked wet from a recent rain, and the trees were lush, the leaves just starting to turn.

"Is that…?" Corinne pressed her hand to her mouth. She knew exactly how the air smelled in the small front yard of the house. It would be thick and sweet with the damp arrival of autumn.

"Oh, my God."

Through the front door, a middle-aged woman limped onto the porch. She looked small and tired. And she looked scared.

"What the hell is going on?" Ken...

Heartbreaking and Courageous Read
By Lizzie McComas
The book started out slow for me. And then it escalated VERY rapidly. It was like a book on steroids.

***SPOILERS***

I found it difficult to believe that a girl would say yes to kidnapping someone for a man she loves (that she only recently had gotten to "know"). I suppose stranger things have happened, though. After the actual kidnapping and when "real life" begins with the baby, that's when the book REALLY captured my attention.

I don't exactly know what it is about the book that is so spellbounding. There's fear, deceit, love, "strangulation", severe phobias, courage, and finally...truth. This book is heartbreaking to me. The beginning made me so angry, but the middle to the end broke my heart completely. It's amazing how you can feel compassion and a sort of understanding for a criminal.

I really recommend this book. I read it all night long because I couldn't put it down. See what it does for you. Like it, love it, or hate it, I think this is the type of book that makes you really think and it stays with you.

LOVABLE BUT FLAWED CHARACTERS....
By Laurel-Rain Snow
CeeCee Wilkes was a vulnerable, sixteen-year-old girl who had lived in foster homes after the death of her mother when she was twelve.

The letters she carried with her, the ones her mother had written to serve as a guide to her as she matured, would be her only touchstone. But nothing in her mother's letters or the life she'd lived could have prepared her for the charming, manipulative Tim Gleason.

The Secret Life of CeeCee Wilkes begins with a prologue in the present, with a young woman named Corinne, who watches as the woman she knew as her mother confesses a horrendous secret in front of TV cameras.

We then flash back to 1977, and to an event that changed CeeCee's life forever.

In alternating narratives told by Corinne, by CeeCee, and then Eve Elliott, the persona she took on while in hiding, we learn about the fear and vulnerability the young girl faced one terrible night in a remote cabin, and how she spent the next period of her life in hiding. And tried over the years to be the best mother she could be to the baby she "stole" in order to protect her.

What really happened in that remote cabin? What would finally bring the truth out? What price would CeeCee (Eve) have to pay for telling her story? And how would Corinne bury the bitterness and anger she feels in order to reach out to the woman she knew as her mother?

This was a story that spotlighted many issues of morality and choice, and which allows the reader to root for CeeCee despite her wrong choices. I could not stop reading or caring about the characters, flawed though they were. I loved this story and would recommend it for all who enjoy family stories and for those who are fans of Chamberlain. 5.0 stars.

Interesting read
By S. A.
This is an OK book. Reads more like an action movie. It is not a literary sensation.
The book tells the story of a 16-year old Cee Cee Wilkes that gets caught up in unfortunate events and her life changes forever. Later in her life she makes decisions that affect not only her life, but lives of people very close to her. The reader goes through an emotional roller coaster and a love-hate relationship with Cee Cee and several characters in the book. The author introduces concepts and characters that seem to be good in concept but end up in bead actions and it is not always easy to understand why. It is a captivating story ( as someone else suggested , good airplane read) but not a 5 star, because of the following reasons;
-I bought the Kindle version and I have not seen the hard copy, so this might be just the kindle version. But there were a lot of typos that I found odd. I hoped someone would have edited the e-version!
-As clever as the plot is, there are some unanswered questions and confusing parts. Why does Bets make that last decision (I am not telling what, not to spoil the book). That did not make sense at all. How did Corinne develop those phobias? I did not get what the author meant by "over-protection". To me, Cee Cee or Eva did what every mother would have done. Seemed like she was the same loving and caring mother to Dru that she was to Cory. There is perhaps just one reference by the husband to suggest otherwise. The author could have done a better job in explaining Cory's character to the reader. Perhaps a few more pages could have written on Cory's childhood and her relationship with Eva. There are also other questions, like How come the police never became suspicious of Cee Cee who suddenly left the town? -What happened to all those who helped her and she named them all? -How did all those working for SCAPE , who was supposedly a good cause, agree to be tangled in a mess that includes death of another person? And neither them , nor cee cee never question that? and most important of all, it did not make sense at all to put her in charge of what happened in the Cabin. For people who had such a huge plot, it was stupid to put a 16-year old in charge and let her control the outcome of what they had plotted so carefully!

All in all this is an interesting book with an engaging plot. Once you start, it will be hard to put it down, but you have to be prepared to ignore some flaws.

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—Coretta White is a bright 17-year-old black girl whose new "Little White Lies" Tumblr—an exposé of her clueless and awkward parents—has gone viral virtually overnight. She finds herself stuck between celebrity and success, unable to keep up with the demands for new content. She secretly hires a ghostwriter, Karl—a 41-year-old white man. Now, with thousands of followers and a TV deal in the works, Coretta must decide if she can stand the guilt of her false successes. The protagonist eventually confesses, and she loses everything—her media deal, boyfriend, and reputation—while she watches Karl get all the recognition and step into her place in the limelight. This book offers a modern teenage dream in real time that ultimately leads to a crash and burn—proving that people are not always what they appear. At times, this novel reads like a trendy gossip magazine, but the fun, quick pace and strong female protagonist elevate it. Coretta's parents, refreshingly, aren't the typical absent parents of YA. VERDICT This book screams pop culture but may also spark deeper discussions about cultural appropriation and honesty.—Christina Pesiri, Michael F. Stokes Elementary School Library, Island Trees-Levittown NY

Review
Praise for Little White Lies

"An over-the-top, ripped-from-the-headlines morality tale sure to be in demand by media-savvy teens familiar with Bey and Kanye, #BlackTwitter and white privilege, after-school altruism, and scam laptop donations to Africa. Today’s brave new world demands more than just the three Rs; Baker and Hastie prove revenge and redemption are requirements, too."
—Booklist

“This book is funny, smart and entertains the brain like few books do today. I highly recommend!"
—Michael Render a.k.a. “Killer Mike," Rapper, Activist, and Entrepreneur

"Little White Lies is a compelling read based on an all too real possibility in today's teen world of social media."
—Midwest Book Review

"Little White Lies is a hilarious, righteous, and page-turning coming-of-age story. Imagine Judy Blume meets Candace Bushnell meets Harper Lee all in one novel. You won't be able to put it down . . . and be sure to read the appendices!"
—Dorian Warren, host of MSNBC’s Nerding Out

"What nail-biting fun! Little White Lies is millennial mayhem and magic. All I want to know is what's next?"
—Rita Williams-Garcia, Coretta Scott King Award-winning author of P.S. Be Eleven and One Crazy Summer

The exchanges are written in brilliant, edgy language that feels like NOW
By richard klein
I’m not in the habit of reading teen fiction, but a friend put me on to Little White Lies, by Brianna Baker and F. Bowman Hastie III (Soho Press). It’s a vivid Twenty-first Century version of what in the Eighteenth Century was called an epistolary novel. It consists of exchanges between a seventeen year old African-American teenager and a middle aged White guy who become her collaborator on a blog written for teenagers, which become an instant success and leads to media offers. But the heroine Coretta has a secret she can’t reveal: much of the blog is actually written by Karl, her ghostwriter. Complications ensue. The exchanges are written in brilliant, edgy language that feels like NOW. It uses multiple fonts and graphic elements to reflect the different media in which the characters communicate about life and popular culture. On the way they say the smartest things I’ve ever read about Beyoncé and Kanye West. I loved this book.

I'm really amazed at all the negative reaction to this book
By Rinku Sen
I'm really amazed at all the negative reaction to this book. It's far better than most of the YA stuff I read. The book's premise hooked me right from the beginning. I found the voice of both characters totally believable, the combination of a Black teen and White ghostwriter approaching middle age was unusual, and the way in which they came across each other reminded me of all sorts of creative alliances I know about. I found the New Yorkers to be just like the middle class New Yorkers I know. I liked them fine -- they're interesting and also shallow, observant and also self-obsessed, smart and also blind to things they don't want to deal with. There was a lot to identify with here.
What I really liked about the book was watching these essentially self centered characters struggle with creativity, fame, and secrets. They point to some of our societal challenges, including the ability to get to fast, anonymous fame that can easily run off with your personality. A great first collaboration that I hope to see more of.

Very timely, fun, raucous read
By Martin Perna
I read through Little White Lies in one night. Like the movie "Grizzly Man," I began the book with a basic idea of what was going to happen, but not how.

The pace of the book, is kind of dizzying, but it works for the story: it mirrors the crazy speed at which someone can become a viral Internet sensation overnight, We're thrust into the life of Coretta, a precocious, stunningly smart and motivated Black teenager in her last year of high school. She has somewhat conservative but supportive parents who drive her to be a high achiever at her school.

One day, she gets annoyed at some of their remarks at the breakfast table, fires off a blog post in reaction and goes to school. Through her well-meaning but clumsy best friend, she finds out that her blog post has gone viral. Coretta writes and few more posts and in a week or so, she has tens of thousands of followers. In the meantime, her boyfriend's parents, who sit on the board a large media company, take a shine to Coretta's blog and forward it to the heads of the media company, who reach out to Coretta for development for a TV show.

All of this, in the span of just days, has sent Coretta into a tailspin as she tries to manage her normal teenage life: school, boyfriend, school activities, trying to get into a good college. At this point, she is about to lose it, when Karl enters the picture.

Karl is a snarky early 40s white professional ghostwriter who has done a bunch of corporate ghostwriting as well as having successfully managed several social media accounts of prominent people. Far from a typical PR person, he's a eccentric who happened to go through adolescence in the 90s as a hip hop head and has all the amazing and fraught tendencies that one might imagine as a 14 year old whose immersion into Black American culture is Public Enemy, Native Tongues, etc.

Coretta's best friend, seeing the strain that being an Internet celebrity is placing on Coretta, arranges, through her parents, for Coretta and Karl to discuss working together, with Karl as a ghostwriter. Although somewhat apprehensive, Coretta agrees. Things get off to a good start, with a fairly harmonious working relationship, and Karl having a fairly good grip on the parameters of his engagement. When he writes a piece about Beyonce that far exceeds any of the posts that Coretta has written on her own, and Coretta locks in a TV deal with her as the star, things begin to unravel to the point that Coretta reveals that she is no longer the sole writer of the blog.

There's a lot more in there, but those are the bizarre and juicy suprises and twists that make the book worth reading.

I enjoyed the two voices in dialogue: Ms. Brown creates a convincing Coretta, a bold, opinionated and articulate high school student, while Mr. Hastie creates a clever foil of Karl, a liberal, cynical 41 year old journeyman social media guru/stoner with Black Power tendencies.

The book takes the form of chapters written in each character's voice, as well as Gchats and text messages between them that happen in the book. While this is unconventional and a little jarring at first, it adds to the authenticity of the book and the pacing...the Internet never sleeps, and because it doesn't, it makes it hard for us to do so.

This book is worth reading if you're interested in: 1) the social media and viral video phenomenon 2) adolescents becoming politicized and using the Internet as a platform for social justice 3) the ability of large media corporations to quickly co-opt organic content (writing, videos, etc) on the Internet and put their stamp on it. 4) novels with multiple authors and multiple voices in conversation (and tension) with each other
