According to the received history, the Cistercian order was founded in Cîteaux, France, in 1098 by a group of Benedictine monks who wished for a stricter community. They sought a monastic life that called for extreme asceticism, rejection of feudal revenues, and manual labor for monks. Their third leader, Stephen Harding, issued a constitution, the Carta Caritatis, that called for the uniformity of custom in all Cistercian monasteries and the establishment of an annual general chapter meeting at Cîteaux.

The Cistercian order grew phenomenally in the mid-twelfth century, reaching beyond France to Portugal in the west, Sweden in the north, and the eastern Mediterranean, ostensibly through a process of apostolic gestation, whereby members of a motherhouse would go forth to establish a new house. The abbey at Clairvaux, founded by Bernard in 1115, was alone responsible for founding 68 of the 338 Cistercian abbeys in existence by 1153. But this well-established view of a centrally organized order whose founders envisioned the shape and form of a religious order at its prime is not borne out in the historical record.

Through an investigation of early Cistercian documents, Constance Hoffman Berman proves that no reliable reference to Stephen's Carta Caritatis appears before the mid-twelfth century, and that the document is more likely to date from 1165 than from 1119. The implications of this fact are profound. Instead of being a charter by which more than 300 Cistercian houses were set up by a central authority, the document becomes a means of bringing under centralized administrative control a large number of loosely affiliated and already existing monastic houses of monks as well as nuns who shared Cistercian customs. The likely reason for this administrative structuring was to check the influence of the overdominant house of Clairvaux, which threatened the authority of Cîteaux through Bernard's highly successful creation of new monastic communities.

For centuries the growth of the Cistercian order has been presented as a spontaneous spirituality that swept western Europe through the power of the first house at Cîteaux. Berman suggests instead that the creation of the religious order was a collaborative activity, less driven by centralized institutions; its formation was intended to solve practical problems about monastic administration. With the publication of The Cistercian Evolution, for the first time the mechanisms are revealed by which the monks of Cîteaux reshaped fact to build and administer one of the most powerful and influential religious orders of the Middle Ages.

Rewriting the history of the Twelfth Century

The commonly held view of the creation of the Cistercian Order has several cherished elements: a foundation date for the order in the early 1100s during the lifetime of Bernard of Clairvaux; the rapid spread of this novel form of monasticism based on 'apostolic gestation' (a mother abbey sends out an abbot and 6 or 12 monks to found a new abbey); the settlement of new abbeys in the waste and disused lands of Europe; strong central control by the General Chapter; and the almost complete lack of women's foundations in the early Cistercian Order.
This well written volume turns this potted history on its head. The author re-examines the earliest foundation documents of the Order and individual monasteries in southern France to compose an entirely different history of the Order's early years. The concept of the Order itself was not invented until after Bernard's death and the General Chapter did not exert control until the last third of the Twelfth Century. In a far cry from the traditional history, the author finds evidence that the Order spread primarily by incorporating pre-existing foundations including many double houses as well as women's foundations. The incorporation of pre-existing monastic communities certainly better explains the Cistercian's amazingly rapid spread and success. Instead of colonizing the wastelands of Europe, the Order took over areas already under cultivation.
There are more surprises in this volume besides those mentioned above. The concepts of equality and charity, exemption from tithes, and other cherished myths of the Order are scrutinized using primary documents. The book focuses primarily on southern France, the cradle of the Cistercians, and deals extensively with women's monasteries and the Cistercian's foundation myth's silence about them.
An excellent read and an essential book for anyone interested in the history of the Twelfth Century or the Cistercians.

Simply one of the best books on Closing in recent years. It puts closing in a very realistic setting for nowadays' Selling, such as seeing Selling as "Helping Clients Succeed" first, then can both facilitate one to succeed in selling and closing, since answering objections comes from seeking first to understand and think win/win, thus building trust and giving clients the authentic reasons and value to do business with you. The book is brief and to the point. Personally like it better than "Helping Clients Succeed" which is more theoretical than being practical.

First, Gabi Fodor is forced into hiding to survive the persecution and systematic murder of the Jewish population. After the Soviet Army liberated Hungary, a Communist, totalitarian regime usurped a short-lived democracy and instantly suppressed creative and individual freedoms in the country. At the same time, there begins a poignant coming-of-age story begins against this tragic political reality. The dramatic episodes cover Gabi's early longings and relentless search for the perfect woman to love. His adventures with various girls and young women are touching, amusing and often a heartbreaking.

George Kaczender is an award winning film director, screenwriter and author. His first feature film was nominated for the Palm D’Or in Cannes, his second for the Golden Bear in Berlin, two of the most prestigious film festivals. He received numerous nominations and awards while working at the National Film Board of Canada. During his career George has directed such luminaries as Robert Mitchum, Richard Harris, Jeanne Moreau, Brad Pitt, and George Clooney in films shot In Montreal, France and Hollywood.

Kaczender was born in Budapest, Hungary and spent over twenty years in Montreal before going to Hollywood. He has also been an adjunct professor at USC teaching film directing.

Notebooks of an Incurable Romantic - A wonderful read

“Notebooks of an Incurable Romantic” by George Kaczender, covers the period from 1933-1956, the time of the Hungarian Uprising. The book, which is set against the Fascist and Communist regimes, depicting their demoralizing effect on a young man in search of true love is sexy in a romantic way. The occasional erotic episodes always maintain good taste. The book gives a realistic view of living under the Nazis as a young, idealistic Jew, and barely surviving the air raids by the Allied forces. It is a coming of age story as well with a highly romantic end. I could not put it down. A wonderful read – just long enough to keep you at it.

Whoever you are hiding behind the name, George, you have no clue as to what this book is about. If you’ve read George Kaczender’s, NOTEBOOKS OF AN INCURABLE ROMANTIC conscientiously, or looked at the title of the book, you would’ve realized that he wasn’t writing about Communism, or Hollywood; they were meaningful backgrounds to a hunt for true love, and finding it after years of arduous search, encountering heart-breaking disappointments and ironic humor in the process. Perhaps you should re-read the book without malice.

This thought-provoking book captures the frustrations and uneasiness of a young man transitioning from adolescence to manhood in a society torn apart by social and political turmoil. It also may cause the reader to question his or her beliefs regarding what constitutes acceptable romantic relationships in terms of the law. I'm looking forward to a sequel.

Good Teaching Translation

I've been using the Oxford World's Classics edition of Republic for three years now to teach freshmen, and Waterfield's translation and endnotes are great. His choice to render dikaiosyne as "morality" rather than "justice" allows a range of discussion with American students that travels outside the courtroom and into the purpose of life and what translation means, and his crankiness in the endnotes (he talks about Plato as an old lover talks about his beloved) allows some great lessons about editorial practices and what's involved in the production of a scholarly edition.

Perhaps more important to my students than anything, this edition of Plato is right at ten bucks, a steal compared to their other textbooks and an invitation to mark up, use, and abuse the margins. I'm sitting at my desk, my battered copy of the 1998 printing sitting next to my keyboard, and I'm thinking that perhaps this fall I'll pick up a copy of this blue-sky beauty.

Insight from 4 centuries before Christ!

Wow, what an amazing piece of history this writing is! You really cannot understate the importance of Plato's "The Republic." The writing explores what an ideal state/nation/society is and how to achieve it. I won't go into too much detail, but the writing covers A LOT of ground. It discusses the nature of justice, the theory of forms, the immortality of the soul, and the role of philosophy and poetry in society. If you consider yourself a learned person, you cannot skip over this writing from 380 BC. The insight it provides to our world TO THIS DAY is simply amazing.

Remen is one of a growing number of physicians exploring the spiritual dimension of the healing arts. "Coherent, elegant, mysterious, aesthetic," she writes. "When I first earned my degree in medicine I would not have described life in this way. But I was not on intimate terms with life then." Now Remen is awed by the vitality of the life force, which she witnesses through her work counseling cancer patients and their doctors at Commonweal, a cancer-help center in California, and through her keen eye for the depths of ordinary people. Remen tells of those who, having fallen ill, discovered previously untapped wells of fortitude and who, ironically, gained a peace of mind they had never known when well. She often turns common wisdom on its head. Discussing the meaning of suffering, she cites one woman who mourned the loss of her chest pains after corrective surgery. These pains had come whenever she had compromised her integrity; now her "inner advisor" was gone. Dr. Remen is a Blessing

Several friends had told me about Kitchen Table Wisdom over the years, and I just put off purchasing it. Then while recovering in the hospital from surgery, the chaplin suggested I read it. I read it during my recovery and have not stopped reading it since. There are so many lessons in the book, and Dr. Remen's selection of stories and writing style present an education on how to be human and to develop a deeper understanding of the humanity each one of us posseses. I look at my life, and those around me in a different way since I read the book. Dr. Remen has taught me that we all have the capacity to make our life a blessing and she is truly a blessing to all that read her words.

Wisdom Wrapped In A Story

If I was sitting across the table and complaining to Rachel Remen about something going on in my life, I am certain she would give me a pearl of wisdom wrapped in a story. Not only am I wiser for the reading of Kitchen Table Wisdom, I am more human.

This book contains approximately eighty extremely short stories from Remen’s counseling practice, primarily with cancer patients. Many passages left me with tears in my eyes. And though the stories were about her patients and coworkers aha moments, it was I who was illuminated. I cried over my negative attitudes and my courage.

Remen exposed me to myself by telling stories of her own experiences as a physician, and then as a counselor. She went to medical school at a time when there were not many women doctors. In order to be successful, she covered over her own tenderness with clinical expertise. Through turns of circumstances interspersed in the book, she uncovered much of the softness that her Jewish grandfather had instilled in her.

Her transparency about her own journey is refreshing, which in turn suggests to the reader that they, too, may have something to discover about their own life.

I was particularly moved by a story of a male patient in the final stages of cancer. What he loved more than anything about seeing his oncologist, he told Remen, were the conversations they would have at the end of his appointments. This doctor was the only person in his life who he felt completely understood what he was going through. Eventually his doctor said there was nothing more he could do; though additional chemotherapy might prolong his life. He did not want more chemotherapy, so the doctor released him from his care. He was devastated; yet he resumed treatments just to have those short conversations! The story continues. Remen is also the counselor of the man’s oncologist. This doctor came to Remen because he felt his life did not matter. He believed if he died no one would miss him!

In three pages, I have been given a beautiful story. Inside the story I see more clearly the value of listening to others with an open heart. And though Remen cannot tell the oncologist of the great impact he was making on one man’s life, she does tell me that even if I cannot see it, my life is significant to someone.

Kitchen Table Wisdom is a must read for everyone who desires to expand their humanness.

Erikson is the man when it comes to understanding identity.

Admittedly, Erik Erikson is not an easy read (in fact his biographer Lawrence Friedman speculates what Erikson could have become had he been a more disciplined researcher, and writer.) Nevertheless this book provides keen insight into the phenomenon of the adolescent identity crisis.
"Crisis" in Eriksonian parlance is not used to connote an "impending catastrophe," but rather a "necessary turning point, a crucial moment, when development must move one way or another, marshaling resources of growth,recover, and further differentiation." Erikson deals effectively with a process that is at the core of the individual and in the core of the individual's communal culture.
After reading Lawrence Friedman's biography on Erikson entitled "Identity's Architect," I have come to appreciate the richness of Erikson's observations, such as "I shall present human growth from the point of view of the conflicts, inner and outer, which the vital personality weathers, re-emerging from each crisis with an increased sense of inner unity...," knowing that Erikson himself came to such conclusions only after examining his own storied past.
The illegitimate son of a Danish mother, and a father of unknown nationality, "Identity's Architect" weathered many a conflict, both inner and outer, as he journeyed toward a sense of his own identity.
Identity: Youth and Crisis is not an easy read, but it is rich with insight into the most mysterious and turbulent of all stages in the life cycle: adolescence. Ideal for those students of child psychology, child development, and those who work with youth.

Getting Old Gets Old Fast

There I was, walking under the blooming magnolias with my "kid" sister, who is now a 61-year old appellate judge, and I found myself rehashing some of the ideas about "stages of maturity" beyond the Piagetian developmental stages of childhood, ideas expounded by Erik Erikson. I read a lot of Erikson in the 1960s and 1970s; most people did. Now it seems that Erikson is out of fashion, almost forgotten. That's a dreadful mistake. The man was never a researcher, never really a scientific psychologist, but he was a brilliant social thinker. His notions of "seven" stages of personality development had very deep roots - far deeper than Freud, reaching back to the Middle Ages and perhaps to classical Rome - and his supposition that "success or failure" in transiting each stage might predetermine a person's chances of success at later stages... well, that's perhaps not a 'falsifiable' scientific hypothesis, but it gibes well with generations of human experience, personal, anecdotal, and literary. In any case, my sister and I are edging into Erikson's seventh stage of personality development. We can look at each other, hark back to remembered 'versions' of each other, and say "Erikson wasn't far wrong."

I realize this isn't a review. I'm offering it to myself, and others, as a reminder that it might be worthwhile to re-read this collection of essays or some other book by Erik Erikson. Who knows, it might contain a spark of wisdom we need to "succeed" at finally growing up!

Erikson still rings through!

Erikson provides for easy reading. He is accessible and uses examples throughout.

He is a founding father in psychotherapy and this piece was published in 1968. However, I am in the process of writing a thesis on Facebook and Youth Culture in modern Ireland.Eriksons developmental theories still ring through today. I am still able to apply them to the developmental cycle of the adolescents I am studying.
