A gift-worthy playbook of common and unexpected words and idioms that have their roots in sports and games.
There are many metaphors we can quickly identify from the realm of sports: covering all the bases (baseball), game plan (football), and par for the course (golf). But the English language is also peppered with the not-so-obvious influence of sports and games, such as go-to guy (basketball) and dead ringer (horse racing). Filled with pithy entries on each idiom, plus quotes showing how big talkers from President Obama to rapper Ice-T use them, this quirky little handbook from former minor league ballplayer and award-winning journalist Josh Chetwynd is sure to be a conversation starter at tailgates, cocktail parties, and in the boardroom.

If you love sports, etymology, or both, this book is highly recommended!
By Meg
Regular readers of my blog might be wondering why I'd request a free review copy of A Field Guide To Sports Metaphors by Josh Chetwynd. Since I have pretty much no interest in sports at all, why would I want to read this book? Well, while it seems from the outside that this book is only about sports, it is also about the intersection of sports and language. And I'm very interested in etymology--the study of word roots and how certain words came to be in our collective vocabulary. (Yes, this is why you don't want to play against me in Bananagrams.)
Though Chetwynd was apparently a minor league baseball player in the past, he is currently a hardworking writer and a gifted researcher and translator when it comes to the subject of this book. He's great at taking his reader from point A (in my case, someone who loves words and hates sports, so she wants to know more about where sports-related phrases came from without having to actually pick up a bat, ball, or helmet) to point B (a person who has a newfound understanding of the origin of sporting words). That is a talent.
I do take issue with the cover, though. While I find the color combination to be classic and sappy, and I do like the snark of the old-fashioned-looking guy holding a pen instead of a sports implement, I was surprised that the cover text and graphic weren't debossed (letterpressed), as they would've been on a higher-quality cover. I've come to expect that higher level of quality from Ten Speed Press, the publisher of this book. Also, the paper of the cover itself feels cheap and kind of icky--again, not what I was expecting. So, while the contents of A Field Guide To Sports Metaphors are top-notch quality, the exterior isn't.
What I enjoyed most about this book (which is the thing I love about etymology in general) is the lightbulb that comes on when I suddenly understand how a word or phrase I might even use commonly originated. This moment is especially wonderful when my usage (or current popular usage) is so vastly different from where the word started that I never would've been able to guess or reason through the journey the word made from the term first being coined all the way up to modern day. Many sports-related words or phrases originated when the specific sport was older, and most sports have gone through significant changes since then. So, for example, I learned that boxing did indeed formerly take place within a ring, while it now happens in a square. Yet, we still use phrases like 'ringside seats' or 'throw your hat in the ring,' referencing the circular boxing rings of yore.
I definitely recommend this if you have a love of either sports, or etymology. And if you love both, I'm surprised you don't already own it!

Interesting!

Sports lovers or those who love studying language and etymology will enjoy this book. I happen to be both, so it was fun to learn some aspects of sports history and sports sayings. It is divided into sections by sports, and I found myself even interested in the sections I thought I would not care for such as auto racing. I figured I knew a great deal about baseball and basketball, but even there I discovered some unknown to me tidbits. Did you know that baseball was played on ice skates during the winter time? Thus, when they went to first base, they would go past it, and so they was allowed (25). And now, runners on dry ground are still allowed to run past first base without being tagged out.
Such an interesting book with a Table of Contents, index, special kind of glossary, endnotes and more make this a good book. I received this book from Blogging for Books for this review.

Hits It Out of the Park
By Suzanne R. Costner
Anyone interested in language and all its twists and turns will have a great time reading through this discussion of where different sports metaphors originated. Because of the connection to athletics, it will also appeal to sports fans. Chetwynd has researched sayings from all types of activities, both team endeavors and individual events. He has traced back to the earliest recorded appearances of each idiom and explained what country and sport it can be attributed to. He also tells what writers or medium first popularized it and when it became a part of common parlance.
Everything from baseball to wrestling is listed, with the phrases attributed to each sport listed in alphabetical order. If there is some question or disagreement, then the possibilities are laid out and the merits of each one are explained. Those that cannot be satisfactorily narrowed down to a single starting point are gathered in a final section at the end labeled "Free Agents: Unattached Sports Idioms and Words."
Something that I especially enjoyed was the author's sense of humor and the way he throws in references to popular culture. Speaking of a baseball player named "Candy" Cummings, he says that "he had a name that was more Willy Wonka than ace pitcher." Discussing the fact that wrestling rings are square, he quips, "You don't have to be a J.R.R. Tolkien expert to know that a ring is supposed to be circular." But my favorite reference has got to be during his explanation about how rounding the bases in a baseball game has come to mean scoring in a romantic sense. He says, "rounding the metaphorical bases reached iconic standing when Meatloaf used it in his 1977 rock anthem "Paradise by the Dashboard Light.""
The phrases that are included in the book range from Monday morning quarterback to wild-goose chase. Some things that you might think logically came from one sport, you learn actually came from something completely different. And some phrases came from the most unexpected places. Not just the humor, or the cool references, but the surprises will keep you turning the pages just so you can see what else there is to discover.
This would make a great gift or be handy to have around as a conversation starter.
