About the Author
Julian Moore is a composer, songwriter, music producer, author and mentalist. Interested in all things strange from an early age, his writing took a back seat to his musical endeavors until fairly recently, when he embarked on a writing spree revolving around the practice of giving 'readings' - palmistry, graphology, cartomancy and the pseudo-sciences behind them such as 'cold reading'.

Julian is now embarking on a series of novels which should be available in the not too distant future. One involves an adventure with some dogs in a region of India. Another surrounds the haunting of a student pianist. There could be some others that deal with a little girl and her friends who discover some strange abilities. Who knows.

Pleasantly surprised

In recent years, whenever there have been discussions about cold reading in certain circles, Julian "Bev" Moore's "The James Bond Cold Reading" was always in the mix. I had been intrigued by Moore's premise and was always curious about the book. Once I learned he made it available on the Kindle, I jumped on it, just out of sheer curiosity. I have explored cold reading, but it is not part of what I do. But, I had to see what was behind the curtain, so to speak.

I must say, when I first read how Moore reworked the 12 classic statements of cold reading and adapted to James Bond's character, I was not that impressed. I wondered how all of the positive feedback and hype around the book could be sustained for years (this was first published in 2007) without any negative feedback trickling in. To put it bluntly, the 12 James Bond statements did not do much for me. But stay with me, because the review does not end here.

As I read further about the Bond statements, Moore elaborated on them and expanded them to include a range of statements one might consider saying for each of the 12. The more I read about the "You Could Say This" statements, the more I liked them. Moore, who is always encouraging the reader to make the statements his or her own and use their own words, was in essence giving people permission to rewrite the 12 classic lines. This was a very freeing experience. But, the review does not end here.

Further into the book, what I realized was the 12 James Bond lines were not really a modern-day retelling of the 12 classic cold reading lines, rather, they served as the framework to give structure to a cold reading. It was then and there when the light bulb went off, and I realized what Moore was trying to accomplish. It made absolute sense, and it was a wonderful revelation.

I had intended to give the book a rating of about 4 stars, but after seeing where Moore is leading his readers, I had to give it 5 stars. As I mentioned earlier, I do not do cold readings, but I was always curious about them. This book is good, and I would recommend you buy it if this is the type of thing you are interested in.

Systematic, fun way to remember 12 cold reading lines

Cold reading is a technique that is said to work on about 80% of people.
It relies primarily on the target's willingness and desire to believe, and as a result, on their 'filling in the spaces'. This occurs while they remain pleasantly fuzzy about who supplied exactly what information, when. So how do you first begin? Through your knowledge of the things that (most) people believe to be true about themselves - things they would not normally be aware they have in common with others. Knowledge of these kinds of personality characteristics, presented as a narrative of insights into the target, move the target into a frame of mind where they become increasingly willing to believe that you have special abilities to see into their inner selves.
What specific knowledge is required to start the belief process rolling? This book shares a list of 12 personality factoids (true for most of the people most of the time). Present these 'insights' properly, and you are on your way.
What makes this book unique is that it uses a fun and easy memory technique to assist the novice reader in recalling the admittedly long 12 factoid list. If you look closely, the book's author also plays with the reader a bit, occasionally 'reading' them, and accompanying these moments with encouragement / salesmanship. Its all in fun, and educational, to see the 'man with the mirror' in a sense 'looking back at his audience'(that is, to see the author subtly using his techniques on his audience).
Customizing your read, using subtle feedback cues, is more an art than a 12 step technique, and true to the book's style it is not covered in depth.
There are a couple of jarring typos, but they don't distract much from the overall experience. In keeping with the easy, laid back teaching style, the book is quite short and stays closely focused on its premise. The author does suggest that those who wish to know more might also read his other works.
Overall, the book is an easily read, informative and entertaining approach to learning the basics of cold reading, presented in a uniquely memorable and fun style.

Easiest way to learn classic cold reading

James Bond Cold Reading teaches you classic cold reading in a clever and fun way. With this method you will easily remember what to say, and you will know how to make it flow into a sensible and natural-seeming narrative in your own words. The method is also useful and applicable to other purposes besides classic cold reading. Julian Moore writes in a very clear and engaging way. The book is easy and fun to read, and gives you more practical cold reading information than any of the longer, dryer books on the subject. As he says in the introduction, he is not trying to make you an "expert" on cold reading - rather, he will teach you to be an actual cold reader.

About the Author

Dr. De Sellers began one of the earliest cognitive-based learning framework courses for American college students in 1973 at Texas State University, incorporating both emerging theory and research-based practice from numerous academic disciplines.  Although carrying administrative duties, including Dean of General Studies and Director of the Student Learning Assistance Center, she continued to teach the course for 25 years.  She holds both an M.A. and Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction, with a focus on adult learners, from the University of Texas at Austin.  Currently she is president of Cerridwen, Inc., a counseling and educational consulting firm, and is a Licensed Professional Counselor with a specialty in pastoral counseling.    

 

Dr. Carol W. Dochen directs the Student Learning Assistance Center at Texas State University. In addition to her administrative duties, she has taught both the University’s learning framework course and first-year seminar course for more than 25 years. She is actively involved in state and national developmental education organizations and was a founding member of the annual statewide College Academic Support Programs (CASP) conference and the Texas Association for Developmental Education (TADE), of which she is a past president. She holds an M.Ed. in School Psychology from Texas State University and a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration, with a minor in Educational Psychology, from the University of Texas at Austin.

 

Dr. Russ Hodges is an associate professor in the College of Education at Texas State University where he co-created and now teaches graduate courses in the new doctoral, master’s, and certificate programs in developmental education. Russ also coordinates the University’s learning framework course. Russ is currently serving his third term as chair of the Council of Learning Assistance and Developmental Education Associations (CLADEA). He is a past president and treasurer of the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA). Russ also serves on the editorial boards for the Journal of Developmental Education and the Journal of College Reading and Learning. He holds a M.Ed. in Counseling from the University of Louisiana Monroe and an Ed.D. in Developmental Education from Grambling State University.

Brutal and honest. A grunt's tale.

This is a grunt's tale. Brutal and honest, you'll find no glorious BS here. Shadix is an excellent narrator and his straight forward no non-sense (but often humorous) prose draws you in and guides you through the violence and chaos of the Korengal Valley in a surprisingly enjoyable and disturbing manner. It is written in an episodic manner that forms a loosely chronological narrative interspersed with amusing interactions among an Airborne Infantry platoon. Shadix has written a hyper-engaging war memoir that will transplant you straight into the misery and camaraderie that is a grunt's life.

This is a book by a practitioner of violence that is written for those who want to understand what is going on in such a man's head. Shadix makes clear from the start that this is his solely from his perspective and makes no apologies for that. There are people he doesn't like and he vilifies them, but even the ones he does admire he is brutally honest in his opinions. He's unforgiving and bitter and cynical, and if you're looking for a book that uplifts the spirit and reaffirms American patriotism, this is not the book for you. This book will, however, give you a sometimes hilarious glimpse into the psyche of soldiers who were asked to endure more than their share. I highly recommend this book for all who have experienced their own share of suck on the front lines, and also for all of those who have a desire to understand or just to know "what it's like." Because Shadix nails it.

Gripping and Unforgettable Memoir.

I strongly recommend that you give this book a try.

I did not expect to like the book as much, since it’s basically all about a deployment. There’s ZERO romance whatsoever. But if you do not know what our soldiers really go through when they are over there, you won’t understand the changes in our veterans as well. Because I care to understand them, I read it. And to my surprise, I found myself not being able to put it down or let it go. This book moved me.

Shadix wrote things in the way he would think and say them. He starts recounting his fasinating war story, backtracking as he needs to fill the holes. Before you know it, hours and hours have gone by, and you're spellbound. Sometimes, it’s even humorous, but more often than not, it’s harrowing.

This book is full of heart and vigor. The writing is raw. The events that transpire were told so realistically. At times, it’s painful to read. At times, you will laugh out loud. At times, you will get angry. But when it’s all said and done, you will feel like you just lived through these events alongside Shadix, whose heart lives on after the last page….

Once I started reading this book I could not put it down! An eye opening perspective on combat life most people will never know. This is an incredibly well written account of the day to day life of a soldier fighting for his country, and his brothers in the deadly Korengal Valley of Afghanistan. Humor laced perfectly inside the extreme seriousness of this story will keep you engaged, and turning the pages. Download this book right away! You will not be disappointed... You will, however, be humbled!

Very interesting and informative.

If you like history I think you will love this book. I mean, how many of us know much at all about the US-Mexican war and that time period in US history? The fact that much of the southwestern US was once part of Mexico and that Texas was an independent country for about nine years is not generally known. In Mexican history General Santa Anna is highly regarded and considered the hero of the Alamo battle. However in Mr Reeder's view he is a coward and a scoundrel. Red Reeder's books are written at a "young reader" level and I would say they are aimed at a 9th or 10th grade reader. Even so, adults will find the story very interesting. It held my attention cover to cover. I'm looking forward to reading more of Mr. Reeder's books and I highly recommemd this one.
