Required book, not really helpful in teaching
By Emin
It was required so I bought it. Most instructions are unclear. Definitly not a book for self-learners. The book keeps making reference to the past chapters even if its something simple that could be explained or reminded with one sentence.

An excellent AutoCAD book for mechanical engineering students.
By Gert Bo Thorgersen
This week I from Amazon received the AutoCAD 2004 book which I had ordered without possibility to look inside it before ordering, but after now having received it I must admit that it’s a fantastic good book which I have received, so I’m highly satisfied.

Mostly I bought this used book for discovering what more there might have come into AutoCAD since when I back in 1992 then bought the last AutoCAD book, even though I then had stopped using AutoCAD. Before that year I during the years 1988-1990 as engineer in a construction department daily used the AutoCAD, after we in 1988 had changed to the AutoCAD PC program for our machine drawings instead of another program which then had used 1 year. During these years I bought 10 books about AutoCAD and AutoLISP, as I by myself had to find out anything, including Changing screen and LISP programs.

The first AutoCAD which I then used was AutoCAD 9, so titled in Denmark, and only being a 2 ½ dimensional. The AutoCAD 10, which I got the following year then was 3 dimensional. But we couldn’t print out with 3 dimensional drawing as nice as now a day, among other because missing colors on the object sides, so therefore only used as 2 dimensions. But during the last 4 years I have made hundreds of AutoCAD drawings by using an AutoCAD from 1997, but still nearly only as 2 dimensional drawings, as this program still miss color on the objects, and some file types is missing.

But the actual book which we here look at is really good, and I had been using AutoCAD during my engineering studying years, which I finished January 1986, then this book would have been an excellent book to owe, part of which can be understood by looking at the following list with the books contents.

Contents objects

Chapter 1 Getting Started 1 - 20
Chapter 2 Fundamentals of 2-D Construction 21 - 64
Chapter 3 More Advanced Commands 65 - 126
Chapter 4 Sketching 127 - 150
Chapter 5 Orthographic Views 151 - 222
Chapter 6 Sectional Views 223 - 254
Chapter 7 Auxiliary Views 255 - 286
Chapter 8 Dimensioning 287 - 344
Chapter 9 Tolerancing 345 - 382
Chapter 10 Geometric Tolerances 383 - 428
Chapter 11 Threads and Fasteners 429 - 464
Chapter 12 Working Drawings 465 - 504
Chapter 13 Gears, Bearings, and Cams 505 - 540
Chapter 14 Fundamentals of 3D Drawing 541 - 568
Chapter 15 Surface Modeling 569 - 610
Chapter 16 Solid Modeling 611 - 682
Chapter 17 Descriptive Geometry 683 - 722
Appendix 723 - 754
Index 755 - 757

First of all, in the book there are extremely many drawings in each chapter, drawing just as desired by a mechanical engineer; none suitable to an electricity engineer. Probably more than half of the drawings with dimension lines, and of these half measured in Inches and half in Millimeters. In some of the chapters we besides also are having Design drawing, that is drawings which in one corner have an exploded 3 dimensional drawing with parts colored in from white to dark, and on the rest of the side, the 2 dimensional measured drawings.

Besides, as seen in the Contents, the book is as fitting for a mechanical engineer by among other having the Chapter 11 “Threads and Fasteners”, and the Chapter 13 “Gears, Bearings, and Cams”, in which we besides the drawings also having many lists of standard units and types. And in the Chapter 9 “Tolerancing”, we get a good combination of drawings and list of the standard norms for tolerances for holes/axels and surface finish. In Appendix we get 32 sides with: Wire and Sheet Metal Gauges, American Standard Force and Shrink Fits, Standards for the different Screws, and so on.

Only one remark. If I had written this book then I would have shown an example on using AutoLISP, the AutoCAD variant of LISP (nickname Lost In Stupid Parentheses), for example a LISP program for a spur gear, as I besides for screws and so on, made during the years 1989-90. That would be a printed down program which would occupy a bit less one side in the book, and used by persons only having to put in/tell the position, turning angel (if gears fitting correctly into each other), dimension (the “size” of the teeth), and the number of teeth. And no matter its size and number of teeth, it will be printed out in less than a minute. But showing such a printed AutoLISP program for waking up interest in using it. The C programming can also be used.

Again, it’s an excellent AutoCAD book.
