About the Author
Most of John Dryden's (1631-1700) early work was for the theatre. He wrote romantic comedies, adaptations and tragi-comedies including 'Marriage à-la-Mode'. He was Poet Laureate from 1668 to 1688 during which time he wrote his most celebrated satires and criticism. In his later years, he turned to translation.

Steven N. Zwicker & David Bywaters have edited this volume. Zwicker teaches English at Washington University and is author of 'The Cambridge Companion to English Literature 1650-1740'.

This particular item does not work on the kindle device. The pages turn very slowly, and sometimes the file freezes up the kindle altogether. I complained to amazon about this issue, but the publisher, or amazon, (I'm not sue who is responsible for producing the kindle version), have failed to respond (although amazon accepted my return). Even if the issues I have mentioned were solved...the kindle version would still be poor: the formatting is awkward and there are no links for any of the (extensive) footnotes.

PS: The book itself i like, in terms of content. I also have an iPad, and on that device none of the errors I mentioned are noticeable, even the formatting of the text appears ok on my iPad's kindle app. So if you use the iPad, or perhaps another device, as your reader, the book may be ok for you (although the footnotes still will have no links, which is incredibly inconvenient).

A Very Pleasant Surprise

I must say I was rather reluctant at first to read this book, not because of the story line but because of the author. I have had a lot of "hit or misses" with Anne Mather, more misses. Her storylines tend to drag to me, but this book was up pace from the first few pages and kept going along until the end. The main characters Jane and Demetri were hmmm confused to say the least, they had been married for 5 years in total and actually together for 2 and a half years. They broke up because of an alleged infidelity committed by Demetri, which he denied ever having done, of course Jane being heartbroken left him. Fast forward 2 almost 3 years later. Demetri comes back into Jane's life because he wants a divorce in order to marry and have a child with someone else. On their first meeting after being apart for so long they end up having sex, which you find out later in the book leaves Jane pregnant, but she doesn't tell him this, because of course they are in the process of divorcing; if that isn't enough Demetri's father is dying and ask that Jane come to see him in Greece before he dies.

Introducing Jane's moral dilemma, should she go to see her dying father-in-law and risk having another intimate run in with her soon to be ex-husband his new fiancée as well as the woman who she suspects he cheated on her with (who happens to be a different woman NOT the fiancée). In this mix add in if you will Jane's meddling boss, her emotionally blackmailing-meddling mother, her mother-in-law from HELL and Demetri's gay brother and his brother who's a priest and you have the perfect cocktail for an ABC network movie of the week!!!!!! It was fabulously trashy and dramatic, and somehow these two find their way back to one another through all the muck and meyer. I Loved It !!!!!

I agree with the other reviewer. Since she has done such a lovely job of a summary, I won't even try. It was quite a quick-paced book and really kept the action going. I loved Jane's character and her desire to stand on her own two feet. I guess my favorite part was that even through it all, they were still able to find a way to be together. (Which as the previous review alludes to would have been quite hard!)

Heroine gets pregnant after having sex once with estranged husband of 5-yrs when he visits her to ask for a divorce so he can marry his new, parent-approved GF. She's not sure when to tell him about the pregnancy & agrees to visit his ailing dad in Greece. Once there, she encounters his disapproving & manipulative mother again & meets his new GF & supposedly old fling.

Why, oh why, did I torture myself & read another Mather book?!...Well, it was sitting around & I couldn't resist the temptation to see if this book was better than the last 5 Mather books I read. I was WRONG! It was even worst than the last Mather book I read. Where to begin...I didn't like Hero & heroine. They were both immature, impulsive, shallow, & irresponsible. They hurled insults at each other & did not discuss disagreements like emotionally stable adults. Hero was a mama's boy & Mather did not convince me that this changed even at the end. And what is up with Hero's cheating-excuse of "You know I'm not a monk." & heroine just accepts it with "I know.". Additionally, Hero's reason for not disclosing the truth of whether or not he impregnated another woman when they were living together was very weak. It just highlighted how screwed up their relationship was. They were both easily influenced by others. Even when they both find out how they were lied to & manipulated by close family members & friends, they just accepted it without showing any kind of plan to confront these destructive people or stay away from them. I do not foresee an HEA(happily ever after) AT ALL between these 2 lust-birds. Mather could not convince me that their relationship was based on love, even at the end when they tried to iron out their Big Misunderstanding.

Read ONLY IF you're in the mood for a messed-up relationship between 2 immature people who only have sexual chemistry going for them.

Forrest's work empowers by integrating head & heart.

I've been a professional astrologer for more than a dozen years, and Jodie Forrest's multi-faceted, multi-dimensional book on the ascendant is the best one I've ever read on the subject. In less than 240 pages, she eloquently covers ground that most books on the subject don't even attempt. She deftly weaves several different conceptions--the ascendant as style, as persona, as vehicle, and as filter (to name just a few)--that taken together create a rich and multi-faceted understanding of an aspect of astrology that often gets only one-dimensional treatment. But the true brilliance of Forrest's presentation is the way she places intellectual, conceptual approaches ("left brain," if you will) along side imagistic, metaphoric, and experiential ones ("right brain"). You'll find something here that speaks to you whether you like your astrology in the language of the heart or in the language of the head. Forrest covers one other aspect of this topic that rarely gets addressed: the connection between the ascendant (in all 12 signs) and the BODY. Finally, she suggests that the ascendant is not a static concept, but a part of us that can, and must, be developed over time. This is part of a refreshingly larger perspective from which Forrest speaks--that of "Evolutionary Astrology," which moves beyond the old passive, fatalistic assertions of conventional astrology, and instead calls on us to employ our consciousness, our imagination, and our creativity in RESPONDING to the questions and developmental tasks put forth by our charts!

Incredible, Ground Breaking Astrologic Insights on the Ascendant

The Ascendant by Jodie Forrest is a ground breaking book with a fresh and innovative viewpoint, unlike many of the earlier textbooks that has been written on this important astrological aspect.

As an avid reader and astrology fan, I have been reading about astrology since the 70's, including the exciting writing of the Forrest duo, Jodie and Steven. Jodie is one of the revered Forrest duo that has been writing and speaking for many years in the international astrological field.

Ms. Forrest gives background information and details on the ascendant that I have never considered before, as well as presenting the ascendant material in an original, unique manner that was fascinating.

I particularly enjoyed the cookbook section featuring Ms. Forrest's sharply intelligent perspective about the multi varied aspects of the Ascendant. There is new material here, which is presented in an intriguing, thought provoking format.

The Ascendant presents a bold and unique perspective - exactly what I would expect from well known and renowned Ms. Forrest.

It is exciting to see Ms. Forrest step out and continue solo writing in addition to the impeccable writing she continues with fellow astrologer and husband Steven Forrest.

For those interested in a bright new thought provoking perspective, this is a great read for beginners and experienced astrology enthusiasts alike.

A solid addition to astrological studies

This book fills a niche that is so often overlooked in astrological books, the rising sign or ascendant. Books on general astrology cover the subject, of course, but while there are many books dealing with aspects, transits, houses and planets, the ascendant has always gotten short shrift, considering how important it is in one's astrological profile.

Forrest's writing is both informative and passionate, showing comfort and familiarity with the subject matter. Like her partner Stephen Forrest, her views are based on what they have called Evolutionary Astrology, which treats one's horoscope as a "map" of the possibilities of one's life. This approach may not sit well with those who have a more traditional, antiquated view of how astrology works and what it's good for. But if you don't mind having your assumptions intelligently challenged, this book is an excellent addition to the art.

A very enjoyable book!

A story that takes place In Forks, Washington. Yes, it is connected to the Twilight series of books and movies but only in a small part where the connection is briefly mentioned. Amber and her mother move to Forks. The mother has some emotional problems and is in a relationship with the town's deputy. Amber is in high school and drives herself there in her old car. It's often raining and foggy but the sun does come out and shines. She senses something sinister and dark but doesn't know what that is. She shakes off these feelings when they descend upon her. She soon meets two brothers Vincent and Viktor. They are both very attractive and she is drawn to both of them. But there is something off about them and all the kids she sees and meets at school. There seems to be something dark and sinister about the whole town. Even so, she makes friends with another girl who was hostile at first. That's another thing Amber finds strange, students and people in the community asking her who's side she is on or who does she like best. This doesn't make sense to her. At one point she goes on a Twilight Tour with Glinda, Vincent and Viktor where she meets an Quileute boy who calls himself Lucky while on the La Push part of the tour. Things seem to get more dark and sinister and she can't understand why. Amber is attacked at a party by two boys, one she was getting to know who say they are trying to save her from them. Soon enough she realizes the 'Them' are vampires. She doesn't believe them. She meets up with Lucky again when she goes on a tour by herself and he tells her vampires are real. She soon realizes that they were telling the truth and that Viktor is one of the vampires. I found this to be a very readable and enjoyable book.

Not for me...

This borders on plagiarism of The Twilight Series. As an over 30 who loved that series, I am astonished this was even published. Setting that aside, the characters all seem juvenile, even the mother (especially the mother). Amber, the main character, can't decide who she likes from one day to the next. This may be a decent book for young teens as there is a lot of dialogue, but I can't recommend it to anyone else.

This book was funny to me. I can only imagine living in Forks after the whole twilight thing. I am sure it is much as this book describes it. And makes you ask what if everything in twilight were based on a true story

He is LMI: Indian Sociological Society, Uttar Pradesh Samaj Shastra Parishad, Indian Research Association, U.P. Darshan Parishad.
